From the Principal:

Dear Teaching Professionals,

Route 39 Academy is a truly different place to teach. Our approach to learning, structure of the day and staffing puts the student at the heart of the learning experience and allows them to take responsibility for their own learning. Staff teach fewer students for longer and so know all students well.

When students arrive at the school I promise that their teachers will get them stuck. I promise that it will not be easy and I promise that there is no escape - because staff know them so well there is no opportunity to coast! Students love this. In the words of one student  "I used to get on with learning. I knew I had to work hard and why it was important, but really I just wanted life to start."

At Route 39 we believe that learning should be fun and pitched right at that the edge of a student's comfort zone because, in the struggle, we know they achieve their best and enjoy the most. Our longer school day and stage not age progression enables students to stretch, challenge and extend their learning and we have ambitious academic targets that we fully expect students to achieve.

Our students are challenging - in the best sense of the word! They expect to be involved in their learning, to be heard and know that their contributions help their fellow students and their teachers to improve. Outside visitors remark on how different our students are.

Staff work extremely hard and are passionate about the difference they make to the lives of the young people in the Academy. In return staff are given generous PPA time and an extensive professional development programme - including 11 full days of INSET.

As a team we currently face the challenges of working in temporary accommodation, but have seen how this drives forward creativity and innovation. All staff work collaboratively on learning and support each others professional development.
