Ofsted Report 2017

Our Ofsted report has been published. It judges the Academy as 'Inadequate' and places it in Special Measures. We strongly refute the judgement and the manner in which the inspection was handled. There was a disproportionate focus on our decision to enter thirteen Year 11 students for GCSEs in 2018, and a lack of adherence to Ofsted's own Inspection Handbook. As a result, we have challenged Ofsted and have issued a complaint.

Addressing the Issues

However, we want to assure parents that we have already progressed rapidly to tackle the areas where we agree with the inspectors.

Since the inspection the academy has:
  • addressed all safeguarding issues. These issues were related to paperwork and not Academy practice. We have also undergone an independent Safeguarding Audit.
  • rectified the way the accounting of Pupil Premium was presented on our website. We have also undertaken an independent Pupil Premium review.
  • employed an independent consultant to report on student attendance and exclusions.

Management Partnership with South Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust

Most significantly, we have signed a Management Partnership with South Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust. A requirement of this agreement is to ensure the Academy is out of Special Measures within a year. The Chief Executive Principal of the Trust, Hugh Bellamy, has expressed the following:
“The leadership of the South Dartmoor MAT have been involved with Route 39 Academy since its inception. The school that Ofsted describe in this report is so divorced from the reality of Route 39, that we want to help address this evident injustice. South Dartmoor MAT will work closely with the academy to support improvement where required and to ensure that its unique vision and fantastic ethos is maintained.”

“During my 32 years in education I have visited hundreds of schools and been through numerous Ofsted inspections. With this knowledge I am confident that the children at Route 39 are receiving a good education from a committed staff.”
